As a member of the 2024-2025 Spirit Captain Team, I am thrilled to announce our intention to collaborate with the Arts Department as part of our efforts to increase and maintain Poly spirit wholeheartedly year-round.
School spirit is fundamentally associated with sports. However, our vision is different: We see the Poly Prep Dance Team attracting and engaging crowds of students, the football team running through banners designed by our talented Poly arts community, posters designed with the creativity and skill of these same students, spirit at arts events, and endless opportunities for achieving this goal.
A specific goal of ours will be having pep rallies for arts events. For example, to support the musical, we can host a pep rally in which Blue Notes (for example) will compete against the musical crew in a competition of sorts. Why should pep rallies be limited to sports? We want to bring the spirit to all Poly events. “It’s going to be a great year, and I think this initiative can really take off,” says Emilia Fusaro ’25, a member of this year’s spirit captain team.
“I am looking forward to and am deeply inspired by the fact that so many members of the spirit captain team this year are very invested in the arts. It brings me pride,” says Daniel Herwitt, Poly Visual Arts Faculty.
We spoke to Mr. Herwitt in the beginning of the year regarding recruiting his students to create a banner that the football team could run through on Blue Devil Night. Although we ran into material and time obstacles that prevented this from happening, we have not forgotten. Being a Spirit Captain means catering to and listening to the constant wants and needs of the Poly community. With this in mind, we want to formally invite the Poly arts community to speak to us about their ideas and desires to help contribute to Poly spirit and events. It is a job we need and want to take. We need to include the arts community in big spirit events to maintain the spirit and engagement of all members of the Poly community.
Artists, athletes, and students of any criteria, we are here for you!
