It was an exciting day in Dyker Heights on Saturday, October 19, as Poly’s teams donned blue, gray, and pink while playing in front of the largest crowds of the year during Poly’s 2024 Homecoming. Here are the results:
Girls’ Volleyball:
Poly’s Volleyball team unfortunately lost in their packed homecoming game against Trinity, making their record in the Ivy League 8-1. After winning their last regular-season match against Fieldston on October 23, Girls’ Varsity Volleyball was named the 2024 Ivy Prep League Champions! They then advanced to the NYSAIS semi-finals, where they lost to Saint Ann’s in a 3-0 match.
Boys’ Football:
In one of the most exciting games of the year, Poly’s Football team edged out a 29-26 victory against Morristown Beard. Senior quarterback Connor Igoe scored the game-winning touchdown on fourth down with under a minute left on the clock. The team’s ability to achieve such a stunning comeback in such a short amount of time is a testament to the stellar clock management skills of the team’s coaching staff. Their homecoming victory earned them a spot as the third seed in the Metropolitan Independent Football League (MIFL) playoffs. The team had a great postseason run, reclaiming the MIFL championship trophy on November 9 with a 41-21 victory over Hackley.
Boys’ Soccer
Boys’ Soccer played an extremely hard-fought game against Trinity on Homecoming. The game went into overtime with a score of 1-1 and ended in a draw. Senior Kerry Song scored Poly’s only goal, making Poly’s record six wins, four draws, and three losses. Led by Seniors Jasper Whiteley, Diego Garcia-Philips, Nicholas DeLuque, and Carlo Carson, the team earned the fourth seed in the NYSAIS tournament. They advanced to the NYSAIS quarterfinals against Fieldston on October 30, where they faced a hard-fought 2-0 loss.
Girls’ Soccer:
Girls’ Soccer claimed a crucial 2-1 victory against Trinity. Junior Piper Lipton and Lila Suter-Chang scored the two goals, making their record six wins, four draws, and one loss. They earned the two-seed in the NYSAIS tournament and eventually advanced to the NYSAIS championship game, where they fell short to Brearley with a final score of 2-0.
Girls’ Tennis:
Girls’ Tennis did not play on homecoming; however, they did play on Wednesday, October 23, at home in the Ivy Prep League Championship against Dalton. The thrilling match concluded in a tiebreaker, and Poly claimed victory, making them the 2024 Ivy Prep League champions. Senior Holyn Karp competed in the NYSAIS
Girls Singles semifinals and walked away with a 4-6, 2-6 loss.
Cross Country:
The Cross Country team did not compete at Homecoming; however, they competed in the George Callano Invitational 5K in Van Cortlandt Park on Friday, October 19th. Junior Natalie Murphy placed first in the meet, and Senior Izzy Leyton finished third. The team, led by Junior Dorsey Smith and Leyton, competed in the Ivy League Championship on October 25th at Van Cortlandt Park. The Girls’ team earned a third-place finish, and Junior Natalie Murphy won the 4km Ivy League Cross Country Championship with a time of 15:21:4. Cross Country Girls then won second in the NYSAIS Championship and qualified for FEDS, the NY Federation Championships. Murphy won first place with a 19:17 finish, and Leyton, Junior Zoe McCullough, Junior Arin Budhram, and Senior Kofi Rossi finished All-NYSAIS. They are currently preparing for FEDs on November 23, where they will compete at Bowdoin Park in Wappinger Falls, NY.
