Boys’ + Girls’ Basketball:
With the fall sports season coming to a close, Poly Prep Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball is looking to take the courts by storm. Their rosters look impressive and have a lot of new talent. Girls Head Coach Cherkira Lashley and Boys Head Coach Edgar De La Rosa have spent their respective preseasons efficiently preparing their players for a challenging season ahead of them. Both teams and coaches have ambitious goals and seek to bring the NYSAIS title back to Poly.
“This season, our goals go beyond the court. We aim to foster leadership skills, confidence, connection, and discipline through basketball. We also want our players to build deep and meaningful relationships—and, of course, we want to WIN!” Lashley said.
De La Rosa hopes to continue Poly’s reign on the court and bring back another consecutive NYSAIS title.
“Preseason has been looking good for us. The team is coming together, and I am excited to see what these boys can do this season. Given our previous success with prior seasons, I think we have a good chance this year,” said De La Rosa.
Indoor Track and Field:
Poly’s Indoor Track and Field Team looks exciting going into their second season with Head Coach Jerell Jones. Last year, the team took home the Ivy Prep League Championship and the NYSAIS Championship for both the boys’ and girls’ teams. However, with the loss of many important seniors from last season, the team has work to do in order to maintain their dominance.
“There will be several adjustments. Each year and season presents new challenges. With the graduation of many seniors from last year’s team, we will rely on the versatility of our athletes. Creating training plans that enable the team to see success across a variety of events will be the strategy for this upcoming season,” said Jones
Despite these challenges, the team looks promising heading into their season.
Squash:
The Poly Squash Team is looking to bounce back from last year’s season and has high hopes to do so. With an abundance of new talent coming into the program, Head Coach Omer Khalifa is looking forward to developing his young team to prepare them not only for this season but for the years to come.
“The loss of seven seniors, many of whom were starters, will undoubtedly have an impact on the team. However, the presence of talented new players this year offers an opportunity to rebuild and develop a strong team. It may take some time for the new players to fully integrate and adapt to their roles, but with proper coaching and teamwork, the team can still perform well and perhaps even exceed previous achievements,” said Khalifa.
Wrestling:
Poly’s Wrestling Team is looking to dominate the mats this season. With a productive 2023-2024 season in the books, Head Coach Constantine Adveev looks to further his team’s accomplishments by pushing his wrestlers harder than ever. Despite the loss of crucial seniors from last year’s team, the wrestling program, similar to the squash team, is looking to rebuild and develop a consistent team while still making a push for the top spot in NYSAIS.
Swimming:
As the winter cold shuts down the playing fields, the Swim Team is getting to work inside Poly’s state-of-the-art indoor pool. The team is looking to bring back yet another NYSAIS title. With an exciting boys and girls roster, the teams look promising as their season approaches.
Hockey:
After a year away from the rink, Poly’s Hockey Team is primed and ready for their next season. The team is looking for redemption as they attempt to reclaim their Big Apple Hockey League (BAHL) championship. The team seems promising as rising stars in the junior and sophomore classes are looking to take the ice by storm, bringing Poly’s name back to the top. Head Coach Matt Goslar is excited for this upcoming season and encourages Poly fans to look forward to a competitive season on the ice.
“Fans should get ready to watch fierce, fearless athletes who are not intimidated by anyone. Our team has quick players with slick moves, and we’re going to be exciting and dynamic on the ice,” said Goslar.
