Diwali is the Hindu “festival of lights,” celebrating the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. On October 30, Poly Middle School held its own Diwali celebration, and for all in attendance, it was a celebration of the light that shines within our diverse community.
During the assembly, the Upper School Masala affinity group spoke to the middle school about the traditions of Diwali, including what type of food people usually eat and how they decorate and clean their homes for the holiday. The group also spoke to us about the meaning behind Diwali, why people put lights outside their homes, and what it means to them.
Leo Cohen ’29 reflected on the assembly and said, “I thought the assembly was very informative to how Diwali is celebrated and what it means…it helped me understand the holiday better.” Similarly, Ryder Rose ’29 said, “The assembly was very interesting, and I liked learning about Diwali.”
At the end of the assembly, all students went to the oval and were given traditional Diwali cookies to enjoy. After the students received the cookies, they were given chalk and were encouraged to draw different things on the floor to commemorate the Holiday. Students drew the sun, peace signs, and flags and greatly enjoyed the celebration.
