Senior Tyler Borg was named Big State Sports Player of the Game after his standout performance as Poly Prep’s senior quarterback. This recognition — highlighted on “Big State Sports’” social media account with over 40k followers — shone the spotlight on Borg and his leadership, playstyle, and composed execution on the field.
Head Coach Jerell Jones praised Borg for his maturity and decision-making during the game, noting that his performance reflected both preparation and trust in his teammates.
“Tyler played with poise and confidence in that game,” referring to the 14-7 win over Morristown Beard.
Jones added that Borg’s recognition was also a testament to the team’s collective effort this season. “Football is the ultimate team sport, but when you see a player like Tyler recognized, it speaks to the work he’s put in and the way our whole team has rallied around him,” he explained.
This award has also had ramifications for the larger team, boosting morale as a challenging season approaches.
Jones appreciates this boost in energy and noted that moments of recognition can motivate the entire team. “Awards like this are great, but what excites me more is how it fuels our team’s motivation heading into the rest of the season.”
Borg expressed how meaningful the honor was for him, personally stating that it was his first time receiving an award like this.
“It felt great being recognized, especially by such a great media organization,” Borg said. He shared that the recognition was significant because it marked his first personal award in his football career: “This was the first time I have ever received an honor like this. I think my teammates and coaches putting me in the best position to succeed contributed most to my performance in the game.”
Athletic Director Peter Soto highlighted how the recognition reflects the overall strength of Poly’s athletic program.
“Having one of our athletes highlighted by Big State Sports puts a positive spotlight on Poly Athletics. It shows the level of talent and commitment we have here,” Soto said.
He also spoke on the broader impact that Borg’s success has had on the Poly Prep community.
“Moments like this are inspiring for younger athletes. They see what’s possible when you put in the work on and off the field,” said Soto.
Sophomore quarterback Nicholas Raptis said Borg’s recognition has motivated the rest of the team to push harder in practice, a sentiment Sophomore Rogan McMahon shared. “Seeing Tyler win that award makes me want to work even harder,” McMahon said. “It shows that if you trust the process and keep grinding, good things can happen.”
With Borg’s emerging leadership and the football team’s growing momentum, Poly’s football program continues to build confidence and pride. The recognition not only celebrates an individual achievement for Borg but also represents the spirit of teamwork and determination that are driving Poly athletes forward this season.
For Tyler, the spotlight, while nice, doesn’t change his priorities for his senior season.
“For me, it’s always team success first, and whatever comes with that is a bonus,” he said.
