On October 19, 2025, four thieves broke into the Louvre Museum in Paris, France and stole eight pieces of jewelry valued at an estimated 102 million dollars. The Louvre is one of the most culturally significant museums in the world, housing priceless works such as the Mona Lisa and Winged Victory . Beyond their material value, the stolen items carry enormous historical and cultural significance, including one that was a gift Napoleon I gave to his second wife in the 19th century. The event has shocked individuals worldwide.
The last confirmed theft at the Louvre occurred in 1988, according to artnet.com. Additionally, the protection crew includes around 1,300 guards and specialized teams, according to The New York Times. Even so, the thieves’ extensive planning allowed them to enter and exit the Louvre in under 5 minutes, according to The New York Times.
Moreover, the lack of protection of valuable items by security staff at the Louvre sparked outrage and embarrassment across France. French President Emmanuel Macron commented, as reported in an article on today.com, “This is an attack on a heritage that we cherish because [the Louvre’s treasures] is part of our history.”
Reactions surrounding the incident are not only taking place in France but also within the Poly Prep Community. Sophomore Parker Burns said, “The recent heist almost makes me doubt their security, and if all of those valuable goods should be kept there.” Burns also noted how the recent heist could be an encouragement to others to commit similar crimes, stating, “People might feel like if they could do it, so can I, especially being that they were amateurs. So, others might now try heists at other museums.” Parker’s storing reaction, notions, and assumptions about the effect the Louvre will have on other aspiring criminals are ideas being discussed by many.
Contrary to the negative comments regarding the heist, Burns also shared how the heist in a way could partly be positive for the Louvre, stating, “I didn’t know a lot about the Louvre prior to the heist, just that it was a museum, but now I know what is in it, so I feel the heist could bring some newfound attention to the Louvre, maybe more visitors to the museum.”
