From the football stadiums to basketball arenas, New York City is a city that takes pride in its sports teams with loyal fan bases. Madison Square Garden is home to the New York Knicks, and Yankee Stadium is home to the Yankees; however, there has never been a stadium in NYC that is primarily for soccer. Construction of Etihad Park, a new soccer stadium, is underway adjacent to the New York Mets baseball stadium, Citi Field. The stadium plans to open in 2027 and will be NYC’s first stadium dedicated to soccer.
The groundwork for the creation of this stadium began in late 2024, behind an effort by New York City Football Club (NYCFC) and supported by then-Mayor Eric Adams. NYCFC is a soccer club founded in 2013 that competes in Major League Soccer (MLS) in the Eastern Division. Back in the summer of 2023, the MLS saw an all-time high in sponsorships and revenue, largely due to superstar Lionel Messi’s decision to play for Inter Miami CF. This, in turn, brought Messi’s global popularity to the U.S., with many states or cities opting to begin construction of new soccer stadiums. Miami, Milwaukee, St. Louis, and Kansas City are all places that have begun to try to capitalize on the surge in popularity that the MLS is having. This would eventually lead to NYC doing the same, eyeing a mid-2027 opening date for their stadium.
In addition to the MLS, NYCFC will also greatly benefit and see significant changes following the opening of this stadium. Firstly, the new stadium will allow for fewer schedule conflicts with the team (they currently play at Yankee Stadium). The arena will also seat 25,000 people. This number is equivalent to that of the New York Red Bulls, NYCFC’s longtime rival, allowing for a better competitive environment overall between the two teams. “We cannot wait to welcome our fans for the first-ever New York City FC match at Etihad Park,” NYCFC CEO Brad Sims told the Queens Daily Eagle. “Construction is progressing incredibly well, and we remain on schedule.”. While the newfound benefits to both the MLS and New York-specific teams are soon to come, there are other things that the construction of the new stadium will allow in NYC. Despite soccer’s global popularity, it is typically played more in Europe or South America than in the US. With the creation of this new stadium, however, one of New York’s biggest soccer clubs will have a true home arena and a place where fans or other soccer teams can play as well. “[Soccer] helps a lot of younger kids in middle school get their energy out, and use it in a productive way,” says Dorsey Smith ’26. This may also in turn lead to more children developing a passion for the sport by giving them another true team to root for, as well as them potentially getting the opportunity to play there one day. “When I was younger, there weren’t a lot of places to play soccer [in NYC], says Aidan Richards ’26, so opening up a new place in Queens really gives a lot of opportunities to younger kids that want to play, and I would say more space is [definitely] needed.”
As the construction of Etihad Park nears completion, soccer enthusiasts, such as players and fans, will have the opportunity to watch teams play in the all-new 55,000-person arena. Soccer as a sport will gain more traction in NYC as a result of this, potentially making soccer a more prominent sport. “[Soccer] helps [kids] grow their social circles,” states Zach Gaylor ’26. After Etihad Park is finished being built, a new era will be underway for soccer as a whole in NYC. “‘With Major League Soccer transitioning to a new competition calendar, we believe the right moment to open Etihad Park is at the start of the 2027-28 season…We are incredibly grateful for our fans’ continued support and look forward to beginning this next chapter together at Etihad Park,” said Sims.
